Louisa Smieska

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Department of Scientific Research
Andrew W. Mellon Senior Fellow
New York, New York

Louisa Smieska received her PhD in Materials Chemistry from Cornell University in 2015 and then pursued postdoctoral research at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS), where she developed expertise in scanning X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and the corresponding data analysis. Her fellowship at The Metropolitan Museum of Art focused on examination of paintings, photographs, and other objects with the Museum's Bruker M6 Jetstream XRF scanner, leading to a greater understanding of the capabilities and limitations of this system in acquiring 2D elemental maps. Her current research explores laboratory- and synchrotron-based x-ray imaging techniques with an emphasis on cultural heritage applications.
