I'm the collections management system administrator at Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh. My interest in attending the AIC Electronic Media specialty sessions is to learn best practices for cataloging and stewardship of electronic media artworks and related materials.
CMOA’s Department of Film and Video (1970–2003)--also called the Film Program, the Film Section, and the Section of Film and Video--was among the first of its kind when it opened in 1970, and it played a dynamic role in regional and national film communities for more than 30 years. When CMOA dissolved the film program in 2003, the department’s large body of records and objects were transferred to the museum archives.
The archive measures 450 linear feet and contains a wide range of materials. Between 2014 and 2015, archivists working as part of CMOA’s Time-Based Media Project processed and digitized the archive with a mind to provide broader access to the records and open them up to the community for research.
Items we are most excited to share include more than 100 audio and video recordings of lectures and interviews with experimental moving image artists such as Stan Brakhage, Carolee Schneemann, James Broughton, and Stephen Beck. The archive also has myriad photographs of artist screening events hosted by the museum, and the Film and Video Makers Travel Sheet, which, in the 1970s and 1980s, was a series of published directories that helped artists promote themselves and book gigs with screening venues across the country. CMOA published the Travel Sheet monthly between 1973 and 1987 and is the only repository known to have every issue.
