Odile Madden is Senior Scientist and leader of the Modern and Contemporary Art Research Initiative at The Getty Conservation Institute. Prior to joining the GCI, she was Research Scientist at the Smithsonian’s Museum Conservation Institute where she developed a modern materials research program focused on the technological study and preservation of plastic cultural heritage. Her other research expertise includes Raman spectroscopy of organic materials, natural polymeric materials, and the problem of pesticide residues on cultural heritage. Odile earned a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Arizona. She also holds a Master of Arts degree in the History of Art and Archaeology and Advanced Certificate in Conservation from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts, and a Bachelor of Art degree from UCLA.
