Miriam Murphy received her MA in Fashion and Textile Studies: History, Theory, Museum Practice from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and her BA cum laude in French Studies from Wellesley College. Before attending FIT she worked as a fashion editor and as a maker of fine art quilts. While a student at FIT she held internships at the Textile Conservation Laboratory at the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, the Textile Conservation Department of the Saint Louis Art Museum, and the costume study collection of The Museum at FIT. She also worked as a conservation intern on the 2009–10 exhibition, Balenciaga: Spanish Master, at the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute, and as a contract conservator for the 2011 exhibition, Knoll Textiles: 1945–2010, at the Bard Graduate Center. She held a 2011–12 Kress Conservation Fellowship followed by a 2012-2013 Smithsonian Conservation Fellowship at the Smithsonian Institution's Museum Conservation Institute.After working in the Costume Institute's lab at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, she started a textiles and costume conservation private practice in St. Louis, MO.
