Dr. Jocelyn Alcantara Garcia

University of Delaware - Department of Art Conservation
Conservation Scientist - Assistant Professor
Newark, Delaware
Jocelyn Alcántara-García joined the University of Delaware in the fall of 2014 after working for about five years in interdisciplinary projects (predominantly in Mexico, where she was born, but also in the Czech Republic and Spain). All projects were conducted in close collaboration with conservators and scientists, and included the examination of historic inks, archaeological materials and seashells, polymers, research on conservation and restoration materials and methodologies, identification of binding media in pre-Columbian wall paintings and non-destructive examination of archival material.

Jocelyn studied Art Conservation for two years at the National School of Conservation, Restoration and Museography (ENCRyM) and received her B. S. in Chemistry and Ph. D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Right after graduation, she started working as a Heritage Conservation Scientist at the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) in Mexico, to later train on contemporary art analysis at the National Museum of Contemporary Art Reina Sofia in Spain and conduct postdoctoral research at Johns Hopkins University.

Although her research is predominantly on dyes and writing materials, her research interests span beyond: from modern works of art (worked on Munch’s, Picasso’s and Tolousse-Lautrec’s samples), to the study of underwater archaeological remains (consulted for the Queen Anne’s Revenge project!).
