Dr. Eric Monroe is the Head of the Scientific Laboratory Section of the Preservation Research and Testing Division at the Library of Congress. Dr. Monroe received his PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana in 2008 developing and applying mass spec imaging techniques to questions of neuroscience. From there, he completed postdoctoral studies at University of Alabama at Birmingham and University of Arizona working in virology and electrochemistry before overseeing a corporate characterization lab at a privately held chemical, floorcovering, and specialty textile company before coming to the Library in 2015. Much of the work in PRTD deals broadly with understanding and, at times, adding interpretive value to collections as well as examining the degradation and failure modes of materials including the impact of environment and treatments on collection items.
